The festive season really is the most wonderful time of the year. Families and friends come together, beautifully wrapped gifts are passed around and decadent feasts fill our tables.
But it is also a time of year that calls for some reflection in order to give thanks for the abundance in our lives and to take notice of those around us that aren’t as fortunate, those who are struggling to make the holiday season both enjoyable and financially viable.
It is important to remember that anything you can do, no matter how small, can really make a difference to those in need at this time of year. It is also a great opportunity to teach your children the importance of helping others in need and being thankful for what you have. After all, Christmas is all about giving and not receiving.
5 simple ways to give back:
1.Clear out your cupboards
Take some time out of your day and get your family to sort through their belongings. Take what you no longer need and donate it to somebody who could make good use of these items.
We know it can be difficult to get rid of the clothes you once loved so we have put together 5 ruthless questions to help you get the job done and help you finally clean out the clutter:
- Does it fit?
- Have I used this item in the past year?
- Will I use it in the year ahead?
- If I was shopping right now, would I buy this again?
- Would this make someone else happier than it makes me?
Don’t forget to gather extra items like shoes, hats, belts and more that tend to collect in drawers around the house. Even linens and blankets are appreciated by someone in need.
2. Give a generous tip
There are many people who make our lives a bit easier every single day for very little pay. Rubbish collectors, gardeners, bathroom cleaners and petrol attendants are but a few. Generously tip those that work hard to make your life better.
3. Share your time & lend a helping hand
If you feel like you don’t have any material items to give, or you’ve already cleared out your house and you still want to do more, than one of the most valuable things you can give around Christmas is your time.
Whether it’s making an extra dinner for someone, offering your babysitting services to a struggling mom, playing with rescued animals, or even making a phone call to someone that is in need of a sympathetic ear – even the smallest gestures can make a big difference to somebody’s Christmas. You can also volunteer your time to different charities or events.
A few groups in need of your time:
- The homeless
- Animal shelters
- Underprivileged kids
- The sick
- Help the environment
Giving back doesn’t just have to be about helping the people around you, it can be as simple as reducing your waste, getting stuck into your veggie garden or simply switching to chemical- free cleaning products.
Greenify your Christmas:
- Turn to more eco-friendly gifts
- Recycle/reuse Christmas wrapping paper
- Avoid creating excess food and packaging waste on Christmas Day by being more conscious during your trip to the shops.
- Reuse last year’s Christmas decor or create your own decor using recycled materials
5. Be a Secret Santa
Socks, toothpaste, biscuits and soap are all items we put into our trolleys with very little thought. Seek out a family or person in need of help this holiday season, and pack them a box of a few goodies that will make a big difference in their lives. You can even buy pre-packed goodie boxes from shops like Pick n Pay.
We can sometimes get caught up in the worries or stresses of life, especially during this busy month. Lets stop, reflect and help those around us this festive season.
Happy holidays from the Dainfern team!
