What is Beach Tennis and Where Do I Sign Up?
Joburgers can’t get enough of the beach. We flock down to Durban in our thousands each and every year for a taste of the salty, December air. Perhaps you plan a yearly trip to a tropical paradise like Mozambique, Mauritius or Malta. Or escape to the quiet, sandy dunes of the Namibian shoreline. Wherever you plan to sip cocktails on the coast, you can agree that beach life this time of year is simply the best. So why not experience the sand between your toes in your everyday life? With the South African Beach Tennis revolution on the rise, you can.
All about Beach Tennis
A simple and straightforward game, beach tennis can be played by just about anyone who takes interest in the sport. Likened to that of paddleball, beach tennis is an activity that gets your heart rate going, while having a lower impact on your knees and other joints.
Beach tennis preserves many of the traditional tennis rules, with all the fun and exciting elements of sports like beach volleyball. The sport has actually been around since the 70s but has only really taken off in the early 2000s. Now, the dynamic sport has hit South Africa by storm, and we can’t get enough of the fun.
Bringing the sport to South African shores
2018 is the year of Beach Tennis for South Africa – the sport has recently taken off in a massive way. Tennis South Africa has announced the official launch of beach tennis, and through this, South Africa has become one of almost 50 nations to adopt the format. Tennis South Africa have recently announced the KIA Summer Slam Beach Tennis Tour, which forms part of the ITF Beach Tennis Tour. The 3 locations are:
- 8 – 10 December St Francis & Cape St Francis – Prize Money $2500
- 12 – 14 December Knysna – Prize Money $2500
- 15 – 18 December Plettenberg Bay – Prize Money $6500
- 18 – 21 December Plettenberg Bay – Prize Money $25,000
We encourage all residents on holiday in any of the above beautiful locations to go watch
this fun sport being played by some of the world’s best beach tennis players.
Beach Tennis at Dainfern
Plans to bring Beach Tennis to Dainfern in 2019 are being currently being finalized. This
growing exciting game, which can be played by the whole family, with no tennis experience,
will be launched at the Pavilion in early 2019.
Bonny Davidson who is a SA beach tennis champ, and a resident of the Estate who represented SA in Russia earlier this year, is holding beach tennis lessons during November – every Wednesday evening from 19h00 at the Pavilion – come and join us.
We will be announcing the launch date in February 2019 very soon.
